According to SI's Jon Heyman, the Mets are now focused on going after free-agent LHP Barry Zito. The Mets came in second in the Matsuzaka sweep-stakes by bidding about $38 Million....$8 million more than the Yanks but about $5 million less than the Red Sox.
Now it appears they're ready to go after Zito. According to Heyman, they won't give in to Scott Boras' demands of a 7-year, $100+ million contract but they may be willing to go as far as 6-years and probably in the $90 million range.
MetsBlog notes sources that say a deal for Zito would have to be around 5-years and $73 million at least.
Other options include trading for White Sox RHP Javier Vazquez or possibly free-agent RHP Gil Meche (who seems to be the darling pitcher of this free-agent class).
