Well, it's Halloween and here's the latest tidbits/rumors/news from some local papers regarding the Mets and the upcoming free-agency period.
-The
NY Times says the Mets top priority is keeping Tom Glavine. He still hasn't made up his mind whether he wants to return to Atlanta or stay in NY.
-Of the top 2 F.A. starters (Zito and Schmidt), the Times says the Mets appear to have a better shot at Zito. However, they don't expect the Mets to go after either pitcher with a lot of ferocity.
-Instead, the Mets could use one of their two big trade chips (Milledge, Heilman). The Times suggests a possible match-up with the White Sox who are willing to deal Javier Vazquez (Minaya-Montreal connection) or Freddy Garcia this winter.
-The Mets aren't expected to be involved in the bidding for either OF Carlos Lee or 2B/OF Alfonso Soriano.
-For second base, names like Julio Lugo, Ronnie Belliard, Adam Kennedy, Rich Aurilla, and Mark Loretta are being discussed.
-
The New York Post says Kennedy is "intrigued" by the Mets situation. The Mets haven't contacted his agent yet.
-The NYP says a "person familiar with Heilman's thinking" said the pitcher wants to be a starter in 2007 and has told the Mets that. The Post used the phrase, wants to start in 2007, for the Mets or for another team.
-Relievers Guillermo Mota, Chad Bradford, Roberto Hernandez, outfielder Cliff Floyd, utilityman Chris Woodward are some of the names who have filed for free agency. The Mets are expected to push to bring back Mota and Bradford, who both seem ready to test free-agency.
There you have it...happy trick-o-treating
