First of all, sorry Marc, but you can now jump on the Mets bandwagon
Now it's been a long long road for the Mets. Since the dreadful World Series of 2000, it's been a bumpy one. A late surge in 2001 was practically the only light until the Willie Randolph era. In between, we saw some now infamous episodes in Mets history. Art Howe was hired after "lighting up the room" according to ownership. We saw Roger Cedeno, Robby Alomar, Mo Vaughn, Jeromy Burnitz, Armando Benitez all flounder. We saw ownership become hesitant to spend money after those players all failed. We saw the whole Mike Piazza to first base debacle. We did see Jose Reyes come up and battle leg and back injuries. We saw David Wright come up to become an instant star. Then the infamous Scott Kazmir deal. The fan backlash to that deal completely turned around ownership's thinking. At the conclusion of that season, Omar Minaya was brought in and eventually Willie Randolph was hired. Ownership made a commitment and since, we've seen Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Paul Lo Duca, Billy Wagner jump on ship. Endy Chavez, Jose Valentin, Julio Franco, John Maine, Guillermo Mota, Darren Oliver all became key components. And who can forget about Cliff Floyd, Tom Glavine, Steve Trachsel and Aaron Heilman all guys who've been on losing teams who can now taste a sense of victory.
But that's all in the past. Now the Mets can focus on the National League Championship Series where they'll play the Padres or Cardinals (in what would be a 2000 repeat). The NLCS will start on Wednesday evening at Shea.
And it feels like a millenium since the Mets were last here. Damn does it feel good to be back!
