No one should be surprised that Brett Favre's arm/shoulder/body is breaking down 10 months from 40 as the Jets, 40 years from Super Bowl III, break down around him. There should be no sympathy for the aging gunslinger now, just as there was no sympathy for Chad Pennington when he was a one-armed quarterback in the 2004 playoffs and a one-legged quarterback a year ago and lost his job to Kellen Clemens.
How ironic that with two seasons and perhaps one head coach's job on the line, Pennington comes to Giants Stadium on Sunday sturdier and healthier than the NFL's indestructible Cal Ripken. How ironic that Favre will suddenly need more help from his new teammates than Pennington does from his new teammates.
How ironic that what awaits the Jets now is Arm-aggedon:
No playoffs this year.
No quarterback next year.
