Pennington or Clemens?

does anyone have a clue what the deal is with our starting QB this year? I've asked the question to several people and i keep getting mixed answers. One guy says Pennington, the other says Clemens, and where does Ainge fit in all of this?

Re: Pennington or Clemens?

From what I heard Pennington and Clemens will compete in camp for the starting job. I didn't hear anything about Ainge but that makes sense since he's a rookie and the Jets are going for the playoffs in '08.

That's basically what I've heard - an open competition between Pennington and Clemens.
Ainge won't be a factor this year at all as he learns the offense and works on improving his game for the NFL.

I think teams are starting to realize their is a value with developing the QBs slowly like Tony Romo

Well, the NFL is at its core a league of copycats. If it works for one team, you can expect others to copy it ala the zone blitz.

True... and I hate that about it...dudes...he original... I rather take a chance with something new and lose big...then play if safe to run with the pack cause I am doing what everyone else is doing.

Normally I'd agree, but when it comes to giving QBs time to develop, I believe it's a good model to follow.

Re: Pennington or Clemens?

Tony Romo was brought up perfectly for him but other quarterbacks benefit from starting right away like Peyton Manning. I guess each QB has his own optimal beginning point.

Exactly. Few quarterbacks are as NFL ready as Peyton Manning was.
He was just such a hard worker, smart, and a student of the game. The rules don't apply to someone like him.

Drew Bledsoe was another one who started right away and had success. A lot of INTs of course but Manning and Bledsoe said that starting right away helped them in the long run. Another QB who said that starting right away helped his game is future Hall Of Famer Troy Aikman.
