Martin To Make Retirement Official

The time for one of the greatest Jets of all to say goodbye has come. Curtis Martin will officially announce his retirement within the next two days, The Post has learned.
The Jets are expected to make Martin's retirement official with a formal announcement before training camp begins.
All players are due to report to Weeb Ewbank Hall on Thursday, with two-a-day practice sessions beginning Friday, meaning the likely day for his ceremonial final run is tomorrow.
The time and place for Martin's formal goodbye has yet to be finalized, but it probably will take place in Manhattan.

As expected. It's a shame the way injuries ended his career, but he was still a fine, fine running back.

Re: Martin To Make Retirement Official

He was more than a fine, fine RB. He was one of the best in the game during his career. That string of 1,000 yard consecutive seasons may be unmatched. The only thing was he was a quiet guy who never made any noise so he never got the media attention he probably deserved for being such a great player.

A shame injuries ate his knees up but that's the business they're in. Canton won't be too far away for C-Mart.

He and Bettis are special breeds. They really never stood out as one of the best during any given year, IMO, but the had consistancy. While I think he's a likely Hall of Famer, I hesitate to heap tons of praise on either one of these guys because I just don't think they were ever as good as an Emmitt Smith, a Barry Sanders, a Jim Brown. Yet they steadily put up the numbers.

The guys you listed were the elite...guys like Martin and Bettis (I like the comparison) weren't flashy or anything but they got the job done...and for such a long stretch of time.
