Question Jets Quarterback Scenarios For 2007 And Beyond

Ok, this year we all heard how the Jets do as Chad Pennington does and indeed it was true. Despite tossing 16 INTs Pennington had a great year because no way this team has 9 wins or maybe even 5 wins without him. Chad was the Jets' MVP of 2006 no doubt. But...remember when Jon Kitna had that great season for the Bengals about 3 or 4 years ago and the next year Lewis just handed the reigns to Carson Palmer? I'm wondering if that situation will happen with Kellen Clemens. Or will the Jets draft a QB and let Chad play while he learns the game from watching Chad like Palmer did from Kitna. Or has Chad simply entrenched himself as the Jets starter until he becomes ineffective due to age or an injury? After all he's only 31 years old. Chad was great this year and the Jets MVP IMO. I loved it when Chad got hit and landed on his shoulder, came out a play and then ran back on the field pumping his fist and lifting his arms to the delight of the fans and his teammates. Seeing that definitely inspired the Jets in that game. Do you replace a gutsy leader-type like that? If so when and with whom?

Clemens is no Palmer...play Chad til his arm falls off...

Isn't Pennington 30? You don't realize that but the guy is only playing his first completely healthy season now.

I think they like Kellen Clemens and will tutor him along in the system until his time comes.

After today's performance against the Raiders I see Chad as the QB of the Jets for a long time to come! Not just as a passer but as a game manager he's superb. Next year he'll cut down on those INTs he said and I believe him.

Chad will be the starter next year, but KC looks to be the go to guy if something happens. (Hopefully not.) I also want to say that the Jets rule you all. Thank you.

Welcome, NYJETSRULE.

There is a big game coming up next week, and I hope you'll be here to talk about it.

Chad Pennington is a decent QB, but nothing amazing. I never thought highly of him, but he can get the job done. He is portrayed as a solid QB who can hold the starting position, but I'm not expecting an MVP out of him.

Kellen Clemens is said to be an excellent draft choice by the Jets. But I can't say he is the next Peyton Manning before I see him play. In my opinion, he is worthless until he proves himself.

I agree with Chad being a solid QB and really nothing amazing but hey, the guy is a winner. Their record with Chad as the starter is a good one and if he keeps the Jets in the win column are you gonna replace him? I brought this thread back up with the people talking about the draft and free agent signings. How long does Chad start for the Jets? It's been said that Chad can't take a team to the Superbowl but I disagree. Far worse QBs have played in the big dance and it really depends around the talent around him. Signing Thomas Jones will make a great power running game and will allow the savy Chad to playaction and cut down on those ints. In short I think the 2007 Chad will be better than last year and that's damn good. His arm strength is weak but it's strong enough seemingly to hold a starting positon on the Jets and remember that Drew Brees' arm is no stronger than Pennington's and I doubt the Saints are worried about that. Chad's the type of guy who's classy, has a lot of spirit and a likable guy even by his critics. However how does Chad fit into the NY Jets plan in the next 5 years would you say?

Re: Jets Quarterback Scenarios For 2007 And Beyond

Now don't get me wrong Chad Pennington has been an awesome QB for us. Chad has been great, repeat has been. His arm strength is nowhere near what it should be or what brees' is and he can't take us any farther than we have already gone.

On a side note, wtf is going on with the Jets mgt?
How do you let Adaleus Thomas and Joey Porter and Donte Stallworth all go to the Pats and or fins without making an offer?
Thomas Jones is great and all but letting two all-pro linebackers go when you run a 3-4 defense and it sucks at run stopping was the dumbest move ever. all-time bonehead type.

Jets rule.

Perhaps Mangini isn't one of those guys who doesn't sign high priced, big name guys instead opting talent in the draft or lesser known free agents that he sees something special in. I liked your points about Chad though NYJETS. They really make me think about just how long he'll be starting for.

Mangini is more of a conservative coaches, compared to other ones around the league.

He gambles a lot though Marc. Sometimes it doesn't pay off like the Bears game.

Correct.

Do you recall the onside-kick incident?

How could I forget? Still if it worked he looks like a genius. Parcells was a gambler too as well as Jimmie Johnson. Sometimes you need to think outside the box and not be a predictable Buddy Ryan on offense.

Cool Re: Jets Quarterback Scenarios For 2007 And Beyond

I was at that Bears-Jets game (Sat right next to Fireman Ed). People were still standing in front of me when the Jets tried that onside kick. So I had no clue that they even tried it. All of a sudden the Bears had the ball at the Jets end of the field and I didn't know why.
