I don't know the specifics because I'm not a capologist but I can tell you this: If the Jets were to cut Pennington now, they would take a major hit on their cap for a couple of years. They have to give him a chance to get healthy. There's no reason to panick here. Just 3 years ago, Jet fans were sure he was the next Montana. Just sign a competent starter/backup like Collins or Kitna, re-build the other parts of the team and see what happens with Pennington. They can always get another QB a couple of years from now.

Interesting story today from New York Daily News sports columnist Gary Myers, in which he runs down the most likely candidates to be the Jets starting QB next season. The article URL is http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...p-332943c.html but for those who don't want to go check it out, here's a quick rundown of the top five: 1. Jay Cutler (draft) 2. Matt Schaub, Falcons (trade) 3. Matt Leinart / Vince Young (trade up and draft) 4. Chris Simms, Bucs (restricted free agent) 5. Patrick Ramsey, Redskins (trade) Other names include Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, Josh McNown, Daunte Culpepper and Aaron Brooks. If you had to bet the far on the Jets landing just one of these guys, who would it be?

Agreed. I'm high on Schaub too. In fact, I think he deserved a long look in Atlanta last season when Vick was struggling. You know, everybody wants to make it sound like Vick is untouchable. He's a exception athlete to be sure, and perhaps he does give Atlanta a better overall chance to win. That's debatable, though, and in my opinion, Schaub runs the offense better. He'd be a nice pickup. Josh McCown wouldn't be a bad guy to have either. I think he can be a quality NFL QB. Jets could give him a year, see what he can do, and try the draft in '07 if need be.

I have no idea who the most likely is because I don't know what Mangingi is thinking: but here's my personal take on those on the list: No way: Culpepper, Brooks, McCown, Ramsey. Guys I've seen either play a little or not at all so I can't comment: Schuab & Cutler. I wouldn't take a chance on Philip Rivers or Drew Brees. Breez will be coming off a major injury and who knows if Rivers can play or not. Simms: I don't see Tampa not matching whatever offer is given to him but I would love to see him on the Jets. So that leaves Young or Leinhart. I personally would take Leinhard only because he's a pocket passer and his arm strength seemed to improve this year. But if I ended up with Young, I couldn't complain. So maybe the Jets trade up somehow.
