UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- New York Islanders forward Chris Simon was banned for 30 games Wednesday, drawing the longest suspension in NHL history again.

Simon's latest infraction was stepping on Pittsburgh's Jarkko Ruutu with his skate during a game last weekend.

"Several factors were considered in imposing the longest suspension in NHL history for an on-ice incident," league disciplinarian Colin Campbell said. "While it was fortunate there was no serious injury to Mr. Ruutu as a result of Simon's action, the deliberate act of kicking an opponent with an exposed skate blade, especially where the opponent is in a vulnerable position, is and always has been a repugnant and totally unacceptable act in the game of hockey."

"While the act itself was extremely dangerous, the fact that this is the eighth incident requiring the imposition of supplementary discipline on Simon compelled me to impose a very severe penalty in this case," Campbell said. "This response serves not only the purpose of imposing appropriate punishment for the player involved, but also the purpose of deterring the player and all other players from engaging in similar conduct in the future -- hopefully creating a safer long-term work environment for all NHL players."

He was to be paid during his time away from the club, but now with the suspension, Simon will forfeit $292,683.

"It's excessive," Nolan said Wednesday after the Islanders skated before that night's game against the Buffalo Sabres. "What I think has no bearing on the facts. The league suspended him ... now we have to support Chris while he goes through this process and give him all the compassion and all the support we can give him as an organization."

Good. That pretty much does him in for the season. There will only be about 20 games left when he's eligible to come back. He's obviously played his last game as an Islander and probably in the NHL.

I thought he had shook off his demons...I guess not...he had a 29 goal season back in 2000 and I thought he would climb out of his troubled past...but he has seen suspension now.

I dont know about kicked out of the league, how is this different from when Albert Haynesworth stomped on dudes face.. I guess the suspension couldve been longer I guess..but being banned seems extreme..

This is not a one time deal with Simon though. It's the latest in a long line of incidents, not to mention the serious checking last season.

The NHL doesn't need to kick him out of the league. Nobody is going to sign him - including the Islanders.

look i agree that the rest of the nhl will not bring him in but i said it last year that i predicted the islanders to resign him, because of his long realtionship with Ted Nolan, i expect him to be invited back yet again, were i disagree with the theory, i still belive it will happen again.

i have no doubts he will be in the nhl, my only question is how does colin cambell explain himself to some family, when he does this a third time, and seriously hurts someone, the easiest way to deal with this would of been to ban him, and cambell has shown how much an idiot he is by how he has treated every serious black eye that comes the nhls way. if someone used a camera as a weapon in the nba, you better belive stern would suspend someone for a year?


I also belive, the nhl has slowly tried to get rid of the fighting, and this is why i have always said this was a mistake. The players policing themselves do better then these weak ass suspensions.
