Will Mike Milbury just go already! In the 10 years of the Mike Milbury era on Long Island, he pretty much has destroyed what could have been a Stanley Cup Contender.
Consider the following:
1) He traded Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan McCabe for Trevor Linden.
2) He traded the Roberto Luongo (the best goalie in hockey) and Oli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha and since he needed a goalie after giving away Luongo, he drafted Rick DiPietro with the #1 overall pick instead of Dany Heatley, a goal scoring machine. Now the rest of the country will see DiPietro and his .880 save % in the Olympics.
3) He traded Zdeno Charra and a 1st round pick (which became Jason Spezza) for the $90 million dollar 25 goal scorer: Alexi Yashin.
4) He traded Wade Redden for Bryan Berrard who was then traded for has-been goalie Felix Potvin.
5) And his coaching carousel has been interesting: He's coached the team twice himself, hired Rick Bones, Butch Goring, Lorne Henning and then Peter Laviolette.
Ah the Laviolette saga: After 2 straight playoff appearances he was fired. Laviollette, who by the way will probably win Coach of The Year, is tearing it up with Carolina. Laviolette's replacement, Steve Stirling was recently fired, and although Milbury was actually considering hiring Rich Tochet, he replaced Sterling with assistant Brad Shaw. Consdering Milbury's coach and player evaluations, it's a miracle he didn't hire Tochett!
The only good thing Milbury did was acquiring Adrian Aucoin who has become a top 5 defenseman in the league. But then he let him walk to Chicago for chump change and replaced him with the likes of the defensively challenged Alexi Zhitnick and Brent Sopel.
Milbury has stepped down but until he finds a replacment for himself, he will still run the Islanders. Does it sound weird to you too? Yeah - he's actually picking out his own replacment and if they don't hire someone by the trade deadline, he will still do the wheeling and dealing. Ut-oh!
And to think it only costs $120 a seat. I actually like Milbury personally. Anyone who beats up a Ranger fan with a shoe is okay in my book but enough is enough.
I'm not asking for the dynasty of the 80's, but how about a team that can get past the 1st round of the playoffs? Is that too much to ask? |
