Cool DiPietro gets 56 saves

Rick DiPietro set an Islanders record with 56 saves but it wasn't enough as the Islanders lost in a shootout to the desperate Rangers.

Billy Smith and Felix Potvin had shared the record previously with 55 saves.

However, it is worth noting that this is a regular season record.

In 1987, at Washington, in GAME 7, of a first round series, with the Capitals, Kelly Hrudey had 72 saves in a 4 overtime game and the Islanders won 3-2 at 2:30 in the morning and won the series. Pat LaFontaine scored the winning goal.

That was the most amazing performance by a goalie that I've ever seen.

LOL, 56 saves and they still lose. Typical Isles.

(retreats into Ranger mediocrity)...

For what they are paying him, the rest of the D probably said, "Let him handle it"...

Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

That is so frustrating - 55 saves and what do you get? a point.
Empire finds this too amusing.
Apparently desperation is working for the rangers.

Cool Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

They meet again tomorrow night at the Island. My guess is the Islanders will look like a different team.

Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

I am desperate for the Isles to lose. Repeatedly. As a Leafs fan, this is most important right now.
We play big rivals Sens while you play big rivals Rangers.

Cool Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

The Isles play the Rangers 3 more times - all at home.

Actually, Hrudey made 73 saves in that game. This is from a Washington Capitals sight.

Quote:
As 2:00 am on Easter Sunday morning approached, Lafontaine took the ice. The puck found him out near the right point and he shoveled a shot netward. The disc weaved its way between a tangle of bodies and into the back of the net. A dejected and exhausted Mason slumped to the ice in defeat while the exhilarated Islanders mobbed Lafontaine. The Islanders were going on to the second round while the Caps were going home. Lafontaine's goal came at 8:47 of the fourth overtime on New York's fifth shot of the session. Washington had only one shot in the fourth OT.

It was the fifth longest game in Stanley Cup history and the third longest since 1943. Lafontaine's game-winner earned him the honor of first star. Hrudey made 73 saves and was named second star. Mason's 54 saves made him the game's third star. Washington's Bobby Gould accounted for 12 of the Capitals' shots on goal.
History-1986-87-2 - Washington Capitals

Those were my younger days so me and my buddies were in a local bar watching that game. If it were today, I don't know if I could stay up that late.

Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

that was probably Hrudey's best career game.

Those were the days when refs called nothing in overtime. So everybody who had the puck anywhere near the goal was just mugged. With the refs now calling penalties in O/T, I'd be shocked if we ever saw a game that long, again.

Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

I've noticed that, how much refs call in OT now. I mean, just let them go at it, it's five minutes and it's serious hockey. don't call some crappy hook. Let them duke it out.

Wasn't the longest game ever decided by a coin toss after 5 or 6 overtimes?...or one team want to and the other wanted to play on...regardless...I think the longest game went over 110 minutes of overtime.

I never heard that. Can you imagine being a fan one of those teams and you lose because of a coin toss?

Re: DiPietro gets 56 saves

longest on wikipedia says detroit red wings vs. Montreal maroons (there's a name change waiting to happen) that ended 1-0 on March 24, 1936 and was 116 minutes, 30 seconds long - no coin toss.
most recent and third on the list is philly vs. pittsburgh in 2000, at 92 minutes and 1 second and philly won 2-1 (remember when philly used to win and pittsburgh didn't? Primeau scored).
and, ahem, Mats Sundin holds the record for most regular season overtime goals with 15.

I am pretty sure there is a story connected to it...something about the teams being tired and one Coach or Ref wanting to end it with a coin toss etc...I know I read it in a book in Junior High...I will go research it.
