Umenyiora Out 2 Months, Jacobs Out 3 Weeks

Mike Garafolo of the Ledger reports Osi Umenyiora is likely to miss up to two months of action due to the knee injury sustained last night.

He also reports from his source that Brandon Jacobs is set to miss three weeks of action.

No word yet on Eli Manning.

Not a good way to start the season. Looks like Droughns is the man for the next few weeks... but who replaces Umenyiora?

Re: Umenyiora Out 2 Months, Jacobs Out 3 Weeks

Whether Droughns is the undisputed back-up remains to be seen. In the game last night, Derrick Ward was the #2 back (and he did pretty well). I read Droughns practiced during the week at FB so that may have played a role in who was the back-up.

Going forward, I expect both guys to split carries.

As for Umenyiora, Strahan and Justin Tuck are the starters. They probably need another guy (only one other defensive end on the roster). Perhaps they use Mathias Kiwanuka as a lineman but he's switched to linebacker.

Re: Umenyiora Out 2 Months, Jacobs Out 3 Weeks

The AP is reporting that Umenyiora isn't as bad as first thought: "The Giants got other good news on Monday. Former Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora irritated the cartilage in his left knee in the first quarter, and his status is day to day. Halfback Brandon Jacobs, who sprained his right knee, will be week to week."

Re: Umenyiora Out 2 Months, Jacobs Out 3 Weeks

On the injuries, Arthur Staple (Newsday Reporter) wrote:

-"Seriously -- it's not as minor as Eli made it out to be, but it's not necessarily an automatic month either."

-"Osi has an irritation of the lateral meniscus in his left knee and the Giants say he's day to day. A person close to the situation said Umenyiora will miss a month. Who's right? Who knows? Osi wasn't around today and TC isn't ruling anything out there either."

Jacobs is almost set and nobody disputes he'll be out for 3-5 weeks.

Whoever it is, he won't be the pass rusher that Umenyiora is. I wonder if the Giants will give Byron Leftwitch a call.

Are the Giants underselling the injuries, playing it close to the vest?

Hope they're not misreporting things - I know a few coaches have gotten in trouble for that in recent years.
