A league source tells us that, although Giants defensive ends Osi Umenyiora and Michael Strahan are now with the same agent in the hopes of forcing more money for each of them, the team will not yield.
We reported on Saturday that Umenyiora has dumped Sportstars, which finagled for him a six-year, $41 million contract extension in December 2005, and has hired Tony Agnone, who represents Strahan. With five years remaining on Umenyiora's contract, it's obvious that Osi wants more money. And it's been believed for months in league circles that Strahan wants one last big contract, too.
A reader who knows much more about baseball history than we do (which isn't saying much) said that the situation conjures memories of the joint Sandy Koufax-Don Drysdale holdout in 1966. The pitchers wanted a three-year, $1.05 million contract that would have been divided equally between them. After 32 days, the pitchers folded, with Koufax getting $130,000 and Drysdale getting $105,000. Though no one is suggesting that Strahan and Umenyiora might hold out, the fact that they're not happy with their contracts is just another negative factor in the mulligatawny of misfits and malcontents that former G.M. Ernie Accorsi clumsily assembled.
