Giants acquire Tynes Quote:
General manager Jerry Reese decided he didn't want to spend on a placekicker, letting Jay Feely go to the Dolphins in March and signing only two rookies as potential replacements. Yesterday, Reese decided the Giants needed to go to training camp with at least one proven NFL kicker.
Reese acquired Lawrence Tynes from the Chiefs for a conditional draft pick. Tynes, 29, spent three seasons in Kansas City and made 68 of 87 field-goal attempts (78.2 percent).
"We feel better about having a veteran kicker coming in and competing for the job," Reese said. "He has to earn it. We feel like we have a strong young guy versus a veteran kicker and the best kicker is going to win the job."
The competition is Josh Huston, a free agent from Ohio State. He signed in January, when the Giants decided they would not pay Feely to stay. Feely signed a three-year, $6-million deal with the Dolphins.
The Giants have worked out a few kickers during the offseason, Mike Vanderjagt and Paul Edinger among them. Tynes was on the trading block because the Chiefs were ready to hand the job to rookie Justin Medlock, a fifth-rounder from UCLA.

I was suprised about this. Tynes is a quality NFL kicker. Good move by the Giants. I wonder if Vanderjagt is going to ever get another job. |
