Giants to move Mathias Kiwanuka to LB

The Giants announced earlier this afternoon they will be moving 2006 first round draft pick (at defensive end) Mathias Kiwanuka to strongside line backer.

The newly drafted rookie LB Zak DeOssie will back-up Kiwanuka. Antonio Pierce will start at middle linebacker. Meanwhile, Kawika Mitchell (signed from the Chiefs) and Gerris Wilkerson will compete for the weakside line backer spot.

The Giants also said they plan on seeing a lot of Guy Whimper (another 2006 draft pick) at LT in camp, before making a decision on moving David Diehl.

Interesting... is Kiwi fast enough to handle the Sam LB position?

Re: Giants to move Mathias Kiwanuka to LB

Don't like a young talent like Kiwanuka playing out of position. It's gonna take time for him to learn OLB and he might not learn it at all. Not every player is Joe Klecko who played 3 different defensive positons seamlessly. Are they really that hard up at linebacker or do they really think this is a good move?

The kid has tremendous burst and speed. I don't think they would consider the move if they didn't have faith in the kid's abilities. It shouldn't be too big of a difference. The only big issue would be in coverage I assume.

Having Strahan, Umenyiora and Kiwanuka on the field at the same time is a major plus though.

Coverage is a big thing though Empire at the OLB position. There will be some growing pains but at least it's not like trying to teach an old dog new tricks as this is his second year. I still don't like the move but I suppose it could work.

Re: Giants to move Mathias Kiwanuka to LB

kiwi had two coverage interceptions last year, one agaisnt he bears and one against the cowboys. Look i dont look for much from the giants this year if this year is about him learnign a postion and he shows promise im all for it but if he looks completly confused then they need to move him back.

I like the move. The guy is a great pass rusher and to be good in today's NFL, you need a great pass rush. Now as long as the defense can stay healthy...that's the issue IMO.
