I gotta say, I like what he's saying. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders at this point and understands the situation he's coming into. And the last time the Giants had a serious competition at the RB spot in training camp, well, Ron Dayne was still around. UGH.......
Anyway, here are some comments from Droughns from earlier today after the trade was made official:
From Mike Garafolo's Star Ledger Blog Quote:
Reuben Droughns thought he knew what a running back looked like. Until he met the 6-4, 265-pound Brandon Jacobs earlier today.
"I had to look up and say hi to him," Droughns said on a conference call with reporters that wrapped up a few minutes ago. "He's a nice-sized guy."
The Droughns-for-Tim Carter trade with the Browns was made official today after both players passed physicals. That means the Giants officially have two running backs to make up their 1-2 punch. And that's exactly what Droughns said he was told by the coaching staff today: The two will share the load and try to wear down opposing defenses with their tough running styles.
Only one question: Who's 1 and who's 2? Droughns said the coaches didn't specify.
"Either way, it's going to be a competition in training camp," Droughns said. "The best man is going to win and we'll respect each other for that. At the same time, we're going to cheer each other on and I know we can complement each other."
He later added: "It's not my job. It's Brandon's job because Brandon was the guy here and Brandon was the next in line. It's Brandon's job to lose if he loses it and I'm sure Brandon doesn't want to lose it, so it's going to definitely be a good competition in training camp."
