Giants Cut Pettigout, Emmons and Arrington

An almost shocking trio of cuts were made earlier today by new Giants GM Jerry Reese. Gone are LT Luke Pettigout and OLBs Carlos Emmons and Lavar Arrington.

Also, LT Bob Whitfield announced his retirement along with the retirement of Tiki Barber becoming official.

According to Ralph V.'s Daily News blog, the total cap savings from these moves is about $6 million. Meaning the Giants will be about $20 million under the cap.

Emmons IMO was a foregon conclusion. With Arrington and Pettigout, I assume it's a move based on the cap. Both are expendable.

David Diehl may move to LT and they can get some guys to rebuild the depth of the inner line and LT.

There's no doubt they need to get younger, faster and healthier in the LB spot. That's one spot in the draft the Giants may target.

Re: Giants Cut Pettigout, Emmons and Arrington

Carlos Emmons getting cut doesn't bother me at all. I can understand cutting LaVar Arrington, but I wouldn't have done it. The Luke Pettigout move makes zero sense to me whatsoever. David Deihl struggles anywhere but the interior, there are no viable free agents to replace him, and this is a weak draft for left tackles as well. Very confusing move.

I honestly only think the Giants need a strongside linebacker. Chase Blackburn can handle weakside linebacker duties quite effectively, as the man is going to be a good starter in the NFL for years to come. Still, strongside linebacker would become my number one priority, and they are probably looking at someone like Paul Posluszny right about now.

Arrington was a total bust for NY. He needs to learn how to play in a team defense. How many years in the league, and he hasn't done it yet. Pettigout is a surprise but hasn't he been injury prone in recent years? I really don't see anyone here who isn't irreplacable.

the guy didnt play an entire year in a new system and he is a bust?? come on man thats a little harsh dont you think. As far as emmons well ive been prayign since we got him, that hed leave quickly.

And on the premature baby Luke, he always false starts he is always hobbled with injuries and he isnt an elite lt anymore, so why pay him the money he is making i liked the emmons and pettiguet one but not lavar, i would of liked to seen him get a full year

Maybe, if you just take into account his New York days, but the bust factor with him dates back to his last few seasons in Washington was well. The guy is a malcontent who can't play in a team defense and never seems to know his assignments. Someone else will sign him, and they'll get the exact same player, and he'll be a bust for them too.

Arrington may retire, depending on how his leg heals up. There's no doubt, he's not the type of player he was all those years ago. Age, injuries and being in a different defensive system practically every year for the past five seasons won't help.
