Tiki Barber Hall of Famer?

Now that Tiki Barber's NFL playing days are completely over, the question remains. Is he a hall of fame running back? It seems like some either think he is and others say no (and point to other RBs in history who have similar stats but aren't in Canton).

Here are the stats and you decide...

10 Seasons Played
10,448 rushing yards, 4.7 average
55 rushing TDs
586 receptions
5,183 receiving yards
12 receiving TDs
Led the NFL in yards from scrimmage twice (2004, 2005)

-Never led the NFL in rushing yards...but was 2nd in 2005
-Had 1500+ rushing yards three times in 2004-06
-Double Digit rushing TDs twice

Post-season stats
7 post-season games (2-5)
475 yards rushing on 120 attempts and 1 TD
196 yards receiving on 26 receptions

Re: Tiki Barber Hall of Famer?

I voted no. He was always known as a fumbler until Coughlin came along, and it was only then that he really started to solidify himself as a high-quality back. He just wasn't at that level long enough to justify putting him in the Hall of Fame.

Yeah you know...Tiki won me over this year...+15,000 total yards in a 10 year career...the 4.7 average...the catching out of the backfield...

I think yes...But I am for Herschal Walker being in the Hall of Fame...

Walker had a glorious USFL career and still had enough in the tank to get (In his 12 NFL seasons) 8,225 rushing yards, 4,859 receiving yards, and 5,084 kickoff-return yards.... 18,168 total combined net yards... He also scored 82 touchdowns (61 rushing and 21 receiving).

both have numbers that members of the Hall could only dream of...

To me those numbers are equal to players who get 3,000 hits or 500 homers and are almost automatically elected...

Tiki in...Walker in...

You are kidding right?...10K yard in 10 years 15K from scrimmage?...not even the great Earl Campbell, one of the most dominate backs I have ever seen got to those numbers...neither did someone like Larry Csonka...I would say his average per year is better than Marcus Allen who took 16 years to get to 12,000 and 18,000...

Tiki for better or worse is in good company...now as a Cowboy fan I could care less...but he does have the numbers...

Now Goth, you've got to admit that the standards were different back then. In the 70s and 80s, a 1,000 yard season was so good it got you your own Topps Football Card. It was a big deal. But these days, 1,000 yard seasons aren't that hard to come by -- 1,500 yards is the new standard. So you really can't compare the numbers across eras like that.

Like heck you can't...you may not be able to in things like receptions as the game evolves...but Campbell pretty much caught the 16 game schedule as did Marcus Allen...and carries are carries...a good back has maybe 2,000 to 3,000 carries in his legs tops...divided into however many games you want...Tiki at 4.7 yard a shot is jsut a cut below the greats like Sanders and Brown...

You can argue that Csonka in a 14 game schedule split carries with Morris and Kick, and its valid...but unlike Tiki, he also did not shoulder the entire offense...so its hard to argue the point...

BTW, Marcus Allen 12 more career fumbles than Tiki...add that to the argument I made...Allen had 14 fumbles in one season...Tiki's high mark...9

Cool Re: Tiki Barber Hall of Famer?

I voted no. If he had stayed and performed another 2 or 3 years like he has, I might have voted yes, but I just can't put him in the same category as guys like Payton, Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson, etc...

His numbers are in league with those boys...and he average 1,000 yards a season, 1,500 from scrimmage...along with 586 catches...586!...like Campbell and Dickerson, he had about 5 totally dominate years...neither Campbell or Dickerson met with playoff/Super Bowl success...Campbell (Who I personally consider one of the best back I ever say), never broke the 10,000 mark...

On what grounds does Tiki need 2-3 more years?...I mean, yeah, you are a Jet fan granted...and you are loyal to the late 70's to early 90's...okay...but the man has the numbers, plain and simple...

BTW, if Payton was the standard, there would be all of 5 or 6 backs in the hall and none of them would be named Campbell or Dickerson...if Campbell and Dickerson are the standard, then Tiki is in...you can't go both ways with it...

Re: Tiki Barber Hall of Famer?

I think Tiki's close but he's not over the hump. He was phenomenal in the final three-four years of his career. But regardless of the numbers he put up in those years, he didn't do it for a longer period of time. There's something to say for longevity.

i think tiki and bernie williams are simmilar. They both had great careers but didnt do enough to be hall of fame worthy

Re: Tiki Barber Hall of Famer?

I have been reading this thread because I couldn't make up my mind, but I would now have to say Yes!! He was a great back. If some are hung up on him only having just over 10000 yards rushing, remember that was not his entire game. He was also a great receiving back. It was their game plan to get him the ball any way possible. If you include yards from scrimmage it is around 17-18000. Those are HOF numbers any decade.
