Newsday reports the New York Giants will (expectedly) name Jerry Reese their new general manager. He will take over for the retiring Ernie Accorsi (who will stick around somewhat and ease the transition).

Reese will become the third black GM in the NFL (along with Baltimore's Ozzie Newsome and Houston's Rick Smith). He has been with the Giants since 1994 when he was a scout.

As Arthur Staple reports from his blog, this appointment will be made official at a 10:30 (am) morning press conference.

What's funny is I live in NY and even though I'm a Jet fan, I follow the Giants very closely and I had no idea that Reese was black. And isn't that the way it should be? Hire the best guy for the job, regardless of color. But I guess that's polyanaish, huh?

To tell you the truth, I had no clue either until all the newspaper articles started coming out recently about him being the favorite for the job.

I know some may have wanted an outsider to get the job but Reese is highly qualified.

The only outside guy the Giants would have hired was Paeoli, but once he took himself out of the running there were no better outside candidates.
