| My New York Giants Rant- Issue 1 Volume 1 Welcome to the newest Full Cougar rant. This one is about the Giants loss to the Saints last Sunday. Well there has been plenty of insults going across the board about the Giants. Instead of addressing each of them individually, I will make one response conviently placed here where all members can get their comments and bashes out before the Giants beat the Cardinals next week.
First off, before this game I had not thought too much about Eli's contract. I didn't really care to much and figured, hey, why not give him all that cash. Well now it seems the money is weighing his arm down. Eli still has yet to prove to me that he is our $100 million dollar man. If I had to pick one play that ended this game for the Giants, it was the play towards the end of the half when Eli was sacked and fumbled the ball. The Saints consequently scored with a run by Reggie Bush. This was coming off a huge defensive goal line stand by the Giants. Eli also made some poor desicions and threw some picks that he really shouldn't have.
From a defensive stand point, Drew Brees was finding holes in the secondary all day. That was obvious. Going into the half, I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be seeing much more zone defense from the Giants. They came out in the second half, and guess what, I see the linebackers drop back hook to curl. Why they would continue to rune zone defense throughout the game is ABSOULTLEY BEYOND me. I DO NOT understand it. There are two main ways to stop Drew Brees when he is on a roll- 1. Shutdown man-to-man defense.
2. High pressure from the defense.
Of course neither of these were found in the second half. The D-line continued to get their asses kicked by the Saints offensive line. Which left it up to the secondary, who were in zone, Brees had plenty of time in the pocket to find receivers all over the field who continued to make catches. The Giants needed to do two main things on defense, one was somehow give Brees SOME sort of trouble completing passes. Man-to-man would be a good thing to try. Your down by 3 scores what have you got to lose? They also needed to start blitzing with linebackers more after they saw the defensive line getting blown back multiple times.
Special teams was another problem. Hixon looked fantastic returning the ball. If he had just a little bit of blocking on kick return, the Giants may have gotten another score. Since there was none, it forced Eli to touch the football, and of course on Sunday, that was never a good thing. He would either get sacked and fumble it, or if he decided to try his luck and throw it, throw an interception and give it back to the other team. As you can see I am a little irritated with Eli. The only thing that makes this not hurt as much is the fact that the Jets lost through a terrible performance by Mark Sanchez, and that the Eagles lost to the Raiders.
