On Friday, the Saints parted ways with Pro Bowl kick returner Michael Lewis. Though the move has saddened many Saints fans, it's amazing to us that the guy who basically walked into the NFL in his late 20s lasted as long as he did, and enjoyed such a high level of success. Lewis, who drove a beer truck before landing on the Eagles' practice squad in 2000, landed with the Saints later that year and became a star in 2002 as a return specialist. A knee injury knocked him out in 2005, and the drafting of Reggie Bush in 2006 was a signal that the ride was coming to an end.
Still, Lewis emerged from the Physically Unable to Perform list in October 2006 and had the second highest average kickoff return total for his career.
The Saints also released defensive tackle Willie Whitehead, an undrafted free agent who had been with the team since 1999.
