Saints receiver Robert Meachem was down on himself Sunday after having the worst kind of welcome-to-the-NFL experience during rookie minicamp.
The Saints' first-round draft pick admittedly arrived out of shape after falling behind in offseason workouts this spring. He then tweaked his left ankle Sunday morning and had to head to the training room.
"It's not disappointing. It's frustrating, because you know what you can do, and it's kind of hard to show the coaches what you can do when you can't give it your all," said Meachem, who said he did well in spurts Saturday but fatigue led to inconsistency.

It said he even tweaked his ankle but nothing serious. I Wonder if the Titans were smart for not picking him up. Seems like he is either gonna be a star or a bust..

How about splitting it down the middle a star with a Moss like attitude...and what is it with receivers?...do they feel like a middle child and have to act up?...what ever happened to the classy pros like Steve Largent?...having said that I still like TO, and Ocho Cinco...

Rookie Robert Meachem is still bothered by the ankle injury he suffered on the first day of rookie minicamp earlier this month. "My ankle is not 100 percent, but I did a lot more than I thought I would do," Meachem told the New Orleans Times-Picayune regarding practice on Tuesday. "It's about 90 percent. I've (had) to ride the bike about 30 minutes a day. I dropped some weight; almost 11 pounds the first day." Meachem added that he weighed in around 218 pounds on Tuesday.

Meachem Update

The injury news apparently got worse for Saints first-round draft choice Robert Meachem.
Meachem did not participate in Sunday's afternoon practice. He wore a sleeve-type wrap on his right knee that extended from above his kneecap to below his ankle, after working apparently without injury during the morning session.
He limped noticeably.
Saints officials would not allow Meachem to speak with reporters after practice, saying the injury would be addressed after today's open-to-the-media organized team activity session. Coach Sean Payton left the practice field without speaking to reporters, who also were told Payton would speak today on what kept Meachem out of practice.

Saints first round draft pick Robert Meachem needs to have his right knee examined for a potential medial meniscus problem after he missed practices Sunday and Monday. Head coach Sean Payton said after Monday's practice that the Saints knew about a possible minor meniscus problem before they drafted the former standout receiver at Tennessee 27th overall.
"After his exam I'll know a little bit more, but it started to get to the point where it was hampering him [Sunday afternoon] running," Payton said. "We backed him off yesterday and the same way this morning."

MEACHAM NEEDS KNEE SURGERY

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that receiver Robert Meacham, the Saints' first-round selection in the 2007 draft, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday, and will thereafter be out of action for four weeks.

It's a cartilage problem in Meacham's right knee; he had similar issues at Tennessee, but nothing that caused him to miss extensive action. Still, it's not a good sign for the former Volunteer, since each human knee has a finite amount of cartilage, and it doesn't grow back. Once it's gone, the player will be dealing with bone-on-bone contact. The choices? Play in excruciating pain, retire, or undergo microfracture surgery, a relatively new procedure that has had mixed results.

It's not a good sign for a team that used a first-round pick on a position at which, in 2006, they got the steal of the draft when nabbing Marques Colston in round seven.

Meachem is expected to miss four weeks, but should be ready for the start of training camp in late July.

New Orleans Saints first round draft pick wide receiver Robert Meachem underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee to repair his meniscus and will be out four-to-six weeks.
Meachem, the 27th overall pick in this past year's draft out of Tennessee, had undergone surgery in 2003 on the same knee.
"We were completely on page with what we saw from his Combine medical records and charts," said Saints head coach Sean Payton. "If we felt like it was something that was going to be debilitating or something that was going to be real serious, obviously we would have taken that under account. But the type of procedure that was done and what he's got is something that's not going to hamper him in the future."
New Orleans also announced that safety Steve Gleason underwent a microfacture procedure on his right knee and will be out for eight weeks.
