NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The New Orleans Saints designated defensive end Charles Grant as their franchise player Thursday, preventing the five-year veteran from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Grant and his agent have said in recent days that they opposed such a move but expected it to happen. Grant had been seeking a multi-year contract extension or permission to test the free-agent market.

Grant has been one of the leaders on the Saints' defence since he was drafted in the first round, 25th overall, out of Georgia in 2002. He played in all 16 regular-season games in 2006 and was in on 64 tackles, including six sacks. His best season was 2004, when made or assisted on 78 tackles, with 10.5 sacks.

Grant and the Saints agreed to an contract extention today. It's reportedly for seven years and worth upwards of $63 million. The defensive end is expected to rejoin the team on Monday. According to the AP, "Grant has played five seasons in New Orleans since being drafted in the first round, 25th overall, out of Georgia in 2002. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound lineman has 298 tackles, 36 sacks and 15 forced fumbles during that span." So is that kind of output worth seven years, $63 million?
