PITTSBURGH —When the New Orleans Saints come marching into Heinz Field today, they’ll do so as “America’s Team.”

Imagine that.

This franchise, so hapless at times that fans used to wear brown paper bags over their heads, are now the darlings of the National Football League.

These guys with the Fleur de Lis emblems on their helmets are heroes, and in more ways than one.

As recovery efforts from Hurricane Katrina continue, the Saints are helping the healing process by giving the folks down on the Bayou something to feel good about.

As the second half of the NFL season kicks off, New Orleans leads the NFC South Division at 6-2. Only two teams in the league have better records: 8-0 Indianapolis and 7-1 Chicago.

Okay...if we take Katrina out of the picture...would we really care as much about the Saints?...How much is this story going to be about Katrina, and how much about a team that seems to be getting its act together. Can we seperate the two?

Personally, I think its a great story, because the team has had such little success (save for the Mora era), and Payton has put everything together so fast. They could well win the South, which would be a Detroit Tiger-esqe comeback story to say the least. But really, you can't take Katrina out of the picture. Even from a purely football standpoint, look at what this team went through last year, with the damage to the Superdome and their practice facilities and having their "home" games shuffled... that all has to be factored in when telling the tale of the Saints 2006 season.

Most Americans have very short attention spans, measured in nano-seconds. By conjoining the Saints and Katrina, it helps keep the focus on all that remains to accompllish in the restoration of a truly devistated part of our country. Otherwise it would slip to the cracks as so many other important issues have once they are no longer front page.

That said the Saints have earned the spot light after a season af no real "Home games".

Nanoseconds and conjoining in the same paragraph...got to like that...but I highly doubt that the attention span is totally the result of conditioning (though in the face of the information age we all have in a sense)...regardless, the lifespan of most tragedies is about 6 months...after that coping skills take over, and people re-adjust...it is impossible to ask a group of people to operate under emergency conditions for too much time after that.

Still, how much of the success is really Katrina related?...How much does it add to the emotional intensity of the team?...Why was it not winning last year in the face of the recent disaster? Why is it winning this year?...Are the two really related or coincidental?

#2) The Saints home games are at home this year.
#3) Related or coincidental-it's both. Either way, what ever it is, its working for the Saints. They'll make the playoffs but I don't think emotion will carry them any further.
