EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Scott Gomez packed his equipment and bid farewell to the Continental Airlines Arena and quite possibly the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

The freewheeling 27-year-old centre who led the Devils in scoring in the playoffs will become an unrestricted free agent in July, and he clearly intends to test the market.

"We have gone this far, it would be foolish not to see what's out there," Gomez said. "That doesn't mean anything. It doesn't mean I am leaning one way or I don't want to be here. I have talked to all the guys that have played here and gone through this. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity."

gomez was hot in the playoffs and one of their standbys this season
this is only salt in the wound to what looks like a dismal future for the devils

WHat has to be done... Listen Up Lou Lamorillo, Devils Exec's, etc!


1.) You won't find a finer puck handler in the NHL like GOMEZ. Get every corporation in the NY/NJ metro area to hire Scotty as a endorser/spokes person for their products and services. This should mount in the millions and start with CASH RICH Prudential Insurance down the street! This will fill the void you cannot meet on the team salary cap. (Shades of David Beckham!)

2.) Get rid of the SLOW COWS on Defense! It is absolutely apparent with the new League rules and open ice, the Giant, SLOW, Dumb Cows are out as the cornerstone of Defenses in the past. Start looking for speedsters and smart D-men that don't constantly take STUPID penalties because they're out of position from being too SLOW!

3.) Someone please get a trainer/personal scout for Marty B! His entire Career... he has not been able to stop pucks from behind the net, wraparounds, & bad wide angle shots!!! Get him some GERITOL... he's looking slow, tired, and has giving up a lot of "SOFT GOALS" lately!

4.) This is a continuance of 3.) Get a good backup goalie so Marty doesn't have to play 75 games a season and limp into the playoffs breathing heavy.

5.) Find an outstanding training/conditioning staff that knows how to LIMPER-UP the players.

6.) Get Pat Burns back as coach and get Korky back for RUSSIA!

Looks like Gomez is all but gone. According to NorthJersey.com, "Scott Gomez claims he hasn't shut the door on re-signing with the Devils... Ask Lou Lamoriello about the chances of Gomez returning, however, and the Devils' general manager gives the impression that he has little hope of his No. 1 center staying in New Jersey after he hits the unrestricted free agent market at noon Sunday."

Yep, Gomez is a Ranger. In 3 games, he's had no goals and no assists, with 9 shots on goal.
