FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork has been fined $5,000 for unnecessary roughness during the AFC championship game, his fourth fine of the season.

The NFL acted after Wilfork received a 15-yard penalty for grabbing the face mask of Chargers running back Michael Turner with his right hand during New England's 21-12 win over San Diego on Jan. 20.

The fine brings Wilfork's total to $37,500 this season.
Wilfork, a first-round draft choice from Miami in 2004, was fined $12,500 for a low, late hit on quarterback J.P. Losman on Buffalo's first series of the third game. Losman missed the rest of that game and the next two with a sprained left knee.

It seems that money doesn't matter to this guy. Do you think it is time for game suspensions to be added on to the fines?

and i dont want to hear about repeat offender .... Roy Williams did his horse collar thing this season .. was he fined when he grabbed a face-mask ?

Um, he was suspended for a game for being a repeast offender for the horse collars.

I didn't get to see the game. Was it a deliberate facemask, or just grabbing something to hold onto the guy. That could make all the difference if officials think he is trying to hurt people.

Yep, which means the NFL has set a precedent with suspending repeat offenders. But suspend him for the Super Bowl? Nah, let them play.

Suspending him from the Super Bowl never even crossed my mind as an option but your post made me think.

Could the league have the officials on watch to eject him if they see him take what the officials percieve as a cheap shot at Eli Manning?

No, I agree. It would have to be pretty blatant, AND result in an injury for me to call for that. But I do think they have set a precednet. After Williams suspension, I would consider that a final warning to the rule breakers. If they carry on that way next year, I would say post season suspensions should be expected. They carry over in other sports, and the time has come for the NFL.

I won't even try to defend his actions but .... I think one needs to look at how progressive punishment is passed out in the NFL. Are there any guidelines that control Wilfork's penalties? If financial penalties are the only response by the NFL then that is where you need to aim your complaints.
