| Guaranteed Win Mike Mady January 9, 2008 Any given year, any given season, any given Sunday. The playoffs are here. Just a few months ago 32 teams stood and now only eight remain. The list of teams will continue to shorten every week, until one team is left standing. So when the dust – or confetti – settles, who will be left holding the Lombardi trophy? Any other year your guess would be as good as mine. Any other season and it would be more of a hypothesis than a predictable outcome. However, this isn’t any other year. Not in the salary-cap era has there been a more obvious choice. The New England Patriots have taken on, and demolished, all contenders – and for this reason not only should they win, but they must win. If the Patriots fail to collect the franchise’s fourth Super Bowl Championship in seven years their season will be ridiculed more than if they had finished with a record similar to that of the Miami Dolphins. This is a result of the Patriots’ vilification. Their arrogant perception, lack of regard for opposition and the 'Spygate' scandal have made the majority of football fans outside of Massachusetts loath them. If they lose, they will be crucified in the media. However, they wont lose. They can’t lose. Not with arguably the greatest offense of all time, an underrated defense and one of the leagues best coaching staffs – not to mention home field advantage.
