Bill Belichick Wins NFL Coach of Year

The Boston Herald contacted all 50 journalists and got responses from 41 of them. Of those 41, 25 said they were voting for New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, meaning that Belichick is the 2007 NFL Coach of the Year. As a result of the Herald story, the Associated Press made its announcement a week earlier than originally planned.

As the first coach ever to lead a team to a 16-0 regular season, Belichick was an obvious choice -- except that the NFL caught him cheating in Patriotgate, which made some voters reconsider whether they wanted to choose him. Peter King of Sports Illustrated, for instance, said he initially planned to hold Patriotgate against Belichick but then changed his mind.

The other coaches receiving votes were the Packers' Mike McCarthy (15 votes), the Cowboys' Wade Phillips (two), the Jaguars' Jack Del Rio (two), the Colts' Tony Dungy (one) and the Buccaneers' Jon Gruden (one).

It's a joke. Look, the Pats are a great team, but everyone expected them to be good. What about recognizing one of the coaches was on the hotseat, who took an unexpected team to the playoffs? I think Romeo Crennel would've been my choice. Jack Del Rio, Jon Gruden, even Wade Phillips would've been better choices than Belichick IMO.

No, his PLAYERS went undefeated. Not him. Are you seriously telling me that he did a better job of coaching this year, with all that talent around him, than Crennel did - molding a patchwork offensive line into a strong unit, finding a cast-off QB in Derek Anderson and helping to mold him into a star, and taking a team most people expected to finish dead last in the AFC North and winning 10 games with them? Puh-leeze!

Yeah, I'M the homer here. Face it, the Pats are a great team, but their guy didn't do the best coaching job in 2007.

I'm not going to argue with the fact they picked Belichick, though I do think the better would've been Joe Gibbs.

Now tell me this .. if his players had lost 16 games would he be looking for another coaching job ??? Joe Torre couldn't win so he's gone. Like it or not he headed the players/team that set a record. One that may take years before it is even tied. The cheating issue is bunk. Anyone who thinks that there isn't "unfair tactics" (aka - cheating) going on all the time, must trust politicians & used car salesmen.

Yeah, I'm not trying to belittle his contributions, really. But LSC, do YOU think he did the best coaching job this season? I sure don't.
