Re: Belicek is classless

vince isnt saying anything about it being classless to run up the score. Who cares? But what he is saying is the Pats are going to hang themselves if they keep up in this way. Go for it on 4th?? Come on!
And if and when they hang themselves, so what? Who cares? (Except for Pats fans.) Its part of the game and a game it is.

Yep, vince, you've nailed this one on the head. There are, as you say, two seperate issues at work here. Is it "classless" to leave the starters in? No. Is it "smart" to leave them in? No to that, too. Imagine if they lost their starting QB or a key defensive player because they were still in with 9 minutes to go in a 45-0 ballgame. He'd go from being the mad genius to the biggest dumbarse in pro football the instant that happens. I guess every coach needs to decide for themselves what constitutes a "safe" lead, but seems to me the Pats could've easily gotten away with playing subs for the whole 4th quarter and been fine. They're lucky that there were no major injuries.

Cool Re: Belicek is classless

I ususally agree with all of you. But there's no reason to embarass Joe Gibbs like that. None. But that tells you all you need to know about Bellicek. CLASSLESS.

So let the Pats keep this up and one of these teams is going to gladly give up a 15 yard penalty and put Brady out of commission.

I can't wait until the Colts beat the Patriots this week.

i am SO glad someone finally brought that up

After the game, Gibbs said that he had no problem at all with what the Patriots did. He shouldn’t. In 1991, Gibbs’ Redskins had a comfortable 35-17 lead over the Falcons going into the fourth quarter. Rather than call running plays to kill the clock, Gibbs had Mark Rypien throw the ball. He threw touchdown passes of 82 yards to Gary Clark and of 64 yards to Art Monk. And these weren’t dinky passes with a lot of missed tackles and YAC. They were bombs away. That made it 49-17 and Andre Collins finished off the scoring with a touchdown on a return of Bret Favre’s first NFL pass. Nobody clad in burgundy and gold complained about the score being run up.

Re: Belicek is classless

To me, the biggest deal, and it isn't that big a deal, this has gotten blown out of proprtion, is the fact that they are going for it on 4th down a lot.

I don't care how long they play the starters, or what the score ends up. It's the fact that with HUGE leads, they go for the 4th down a lot. THAT is where the running up the score comes from!

However, the whole thing has gotten silly, and I'm one of the first ones who was posting this stuff.

Let's get back to football! There are some great games coming up this weekend!

Dallas/Philly and Indy/New England heading up the list!

I'm ready for Sunday already! RAcing and Football on a cool fall day!

(Go Indy and Dallas!)

we may look at this different ways .......... i see it as the perfect chance to try things

let's say youre up 35-3 in the start of the 4th quarter ..... youre facing 4th & 3 .... you go for it and get it

some see that as classless and running up the score ....... i see it as the perfect opportunity to try a situation under real game conditions that you may actually need later in the season

2007 AFC Championship Game ... Patriots trail Colts 24-27 ... they face 4th & 3 on the Colts 45 yard line .................. maybe "running up the score by going for it on fourth down" was worth it after all

dont know if anyone else will see my logic, but i think its another way to look at it

Or you can also see it as..."hey look stop us here and you get the ball in great field position, we are doing you a huge, huge favor"

ummmmm, no.

Just can't see that. Sorry. I stick out an olive branch, and you stick a fairy tale on the end of it.

I've just gotta laugh at that.

I guess we should all just say it's OK. And it actually is. But lets call it what it is. The Pats are enjoying kicking the crap out of other team, and the think that will intimidate other teams as they face them in the coming months.

That is a lot more likely than any other reason.

simon, you cant believe this. It may be another way to look at it but thats not whats happening and everyone, including you, knows it. Belicheck is sticking it to the league. And you have GOT to be concerned that one of these days he will go too far and as someone says, some db will have enough and hit Brady and take the penalty. You have got to know that.
But like Lefty says, there is nothing wrong with what Belicheck is doing if thats the route he wants to take. They whomped my team. Too bad. Stop the Pats if you dont like what they are doing.

I am anxious to see how Dallas does after the bye. Hope Tony didnt party too much.
I saw the Colts and Jags and I didnt think the Colts were real impressive. It kind of looked like when the Pats played around with Redskins. But this is a big rivalry and it should be good.

Re: Belicek is classless

There are soooo many ways to look at this, that it is foolish. Yes I can see 4th and 3 and attempting something different. What is wrong with that. Yes I can see someone taking Brady for a ride into the DL list. One thing I do see is defense that cannot contain the offense.

Should Brady be out of the game with 45 - 0 lead ? Seems like it would make sense, but there is no written rule to make that happen. Belichick knows what can happen to Brady and Brady knows what can happen. If he gets beaned out of the game then so be it.

Backups are just that ... backups. If they were great they'd be in the game. They will get their day in the sun when it is time.

You are a great team when in a "not impressive game" you win 31-7 and your quarterback sits with 9 minutes to play.

Cool Re: Belicek is classless

I didn't see it, but I heard some of the Redskins players got in Belicek's face right after the game.
