12.excellence; exceptional merit: She's a good performer, but she lacks class.

Here's your definition of class. I think a winning team, no matter which one fits this bill.

If I'm a team owner I want all I can get for my million dollar salaries that are being paid.

the Pats are averaging about 5 yards per carry ........ so it seems they could have continued scoring by just running the ball as well ....... what then ? ... just go out of bounds at the 1 and give the ball to the other team ?

So exactly why is it that we as posters on this forum have "no class???"

Seems like a pretty sharp & cheap shot at us.

Re: What Are The Patriots Supposed To Do

Okay, look at the Dolphins - Browns game from Oct. 14.

Cleveland built a 27-10 lead at the half and had to hold on for a 41-31 win. Their lead was even just 3 heading into the fourth quarter.

Can you blame Bill Belichick for wanting to avoid a situation like that? I sure can't.

I am for running up those fantasy scores...how is anyone gonna break NFL records if you sit after 3 quarters and you skip the last few games?

Re: What Are The Patriots Supposed To Do

Last footnote for me on this discussion.

Quote:
Indianapolis Colts 38 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35 OT
October 6, 2003
Monday Night Football, Week 5
Largest Deficit: 35-14 with less than four minutes left in regulation
Turning Point: Marvin Harrison's 52-yard reception from Peyton Manning setting up the game-tying touchdown.
The Aftermath: The loss sent the Super Bowl champion Bucs into a spiral they have yet to recover from, and gave Manning even more reason to become television's busiest pitchman.

New York Giants 30 Philadelphia Eagles 24
September 17, 2006
Regular Season, Week 2
Largest Deficit: 24-7 in the fourth quarter
Turning Point: A fumble by Eagles RB Brian Westbrook and Andy Reid's atrocious second half play calling opened the door for the Giants to score 10 points in the game's final four minutes.
The Aftermath: Not sure yet, but there could be serious trouble if Eagles fans find out Rocky Balboa was not, in fact, a real person.

Buffalo Bills 41 Houston Oilers 38 OT
January 3, 1993
AFC Wild Card Game
Largest Deficit: 35-3
Turning Point: Backup quarterback Frank Reich leads the team to victory with 28 third quarter points sparked by a 38-yard pass to WR Don Beebe.
The Aftermath: The Bills reached their third of four consecutive Super Bowls, but lost to the Dallas Cowboys 52-17. If you're going to be humiliated, it might as well be on the world's biggest stage.

New York Jets 40 Miami Dolphins 37 OT
October 30, 2000
Monday Night Football, Week 8
Largest Deficit: 30-7 in the fourth quarter
Turning Point: Jumbo Elliott's juggling, game-tying, two-yard touchdown catch.
The Aftermath: Who knew that an Al Groh/Dave Wannstedt–coached game could be so captivating?

San Francisco 49ers 39 New York Giants 38
January 5, 2003
NFC Playoffs
Largest Deficit: 38-14 late in the third quarter
Turning Point: Giants TE Jeremy Shockey drops a sure touchdown that would have given the Giants a 42-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Aftermath: The next week the 49ers were soundly beaten by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—costing 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci his job and the pleasure of dealing with Terrell Owens on a daily basis.
Those are some of the Greatest Comebacks in NFL History.

Proof positive that no matter how big the lead is, the game is never over until the clock reads 0:00.

How about Notre Dame vs USC in 1974?...Irish up 24-0...and lose it 55-24.
Now that is a comeback!

So this seems like official approval to "run the score up".

Also 0:00 doesn't always end the game. The ball could be in flight at that time.

Good point. Or you could have a ridiculous situation like the Jets game yesterday.

Having just scored a touchdown, they were down 38-29 with no time left on the clock. So they decide to go for two. What? Now talk about scoring unnecessarily - what was that all about? Not like those two points were going to impact the outcome of the game one iota.

This is what Belicheck was worried about. I cant fault him for that. He took Brady out, which I would think he would do to protect his player, not because he was afraid he would offend the Dolphins feelings. Had Brady gotten hurt when he went back in, Pats fans would have a different story and so would the rest of the fans.
I didnt quite get the uproar in the Cowboy game either on the last touchdown. So what??? Belichek takes a risk when he does things like that. It just worked out for him.
I could tell as soon as he took Brady out by the score. I also knew when Brady went back in.
Say what you want. This is an elite team.

Exactly. The Dolphins didn't stop trying to win the game, so why should the Patriots be expected to lay back and make it easier for them.
