There will be no retirement speech from Junior Seau this summer.

A source familiar with the situation said last night that the veteran linebacker will re-sign with the New England Patriots late next week, pending a physical exam.

Despite missing the final five games, he ranked fifth on the team with 69 tackles. Seau played so well against the run that coach Bill Belichick personally phoned him this week to reiterate his interest in having Seau return.

Seau, an Oceanside native and former Chargers great, is entering his 18th NFL season.

I dunno, simon. Seau's still a decent linebacker, but his production has dropped off a lot over the past three seasons.

How much do you think he actually has left in the tank?

This is so Junior could teach those new linebackers they drafted how to play in the NFL. He'll be right beside him on the field for not a big percentage of playing time but enough so his experience shows the rookies what it is to be a great player.

I think he could still be valuable. If he is starting to decline, he can come in for certain downs. Be the big run stopper on running downs. He could still help.

That's a lot of tackles for an old man...Linebacker don't last 18 years...HOF first ballot I would say.
