Cornhuskers QB Zac Taylor

Nebraska Cornhuskers QB Zac Taylor had trouble digesting coach Bill Callahan's playbook at first. "You almost didn't know where to start with reading the playbook," the JUCO transfer told Street & Smiths for their 2006 yearbook. "It's really tough until you get coaches in the room with you or get on the practice field doing it live."

Turns out Taylor did a pretty good job learning the playbook, as he threw for a school record 2,653 yards and managed a respectible 115.94 passer rating in 2005. Will those numbers be even more impressive this season?

Respectible but he had 5 games where he threw multiple interceptions...I would look for him to commit less turnovers if he is to improve.

Re: Cornhuskers QB Zac Taylor

He improved dramatically as the season progressed. This cooincided with his recieving corps also learning their roles and the OL learning how to pass block when most of them were recruited to block for the option game. Most of his INTs came while under duress early in the season. The offense appears ready to click this year, especially with the return of TE Matt Herian who has missed the last 2 season due to serious compound fractures in his leg. Herian now appears healthy and ready to contribute the way he did as a freshman.

We'll see. I am not sure that Taylor is the problem. I am not convinced Callahan is a big time football coach. He was awful with the Raiders. I know lots of Husker fans who feel the same way I do.

I second that, AZAggies. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I don't think the Huskers should've ever gotten rid of Solich. He was a better coach than Callahan, if you ask me, and it was lousy the way they ran him outta town.

I agree. He wasn't doing a bad job. In today's college football, it is totally unrealistic to think a coach should win 10 games a year every year. It just doesn't happen. I thought he was doing a very very good job. It is hard to follow a legend though.

Re: Cornhuskers QB Zac Taylor

Solich was fired more because of the fact he was losing the recruiting wars. Several high profile Nebraska athletes went out of state to play college ball and that is unacceptable to the home fans. The other reason was the lack of a true option offense once Solich took over, it became a QB keep almost every single down and made the offense to predictable. It is still too early to judge Callahan, but as a Raider coach, he took them to the super bowl, just how awful was that?

Yeah, I guess losing one of the 3 big time, home grown, Nebraska recruits every year must be a huge deal to the Husker faithful.

I still think the jury is out on Callahan as a big time college coach. I did have my Husker co-worker already state that Nebraska would win the National title next year with Sam Keller as the QB. I think he is WAY WAY out on that limb.

Re: Cornhuskers QB Zac Taylor

Getting back to Taylor, how about his performance last week. Sure, it was just Nicholls State, but it was a hell of a warm up for this kid as he prepared to face USC this upcoming weekend. Taylor threw for 200-plus yards and a career high four touchdown passes, helping the Huskers to run up 500-plus yards of total offense in a big win over the Colonels.

We'll see where he is next weekend vs USC. He did what he was supposed to this weekend, so I am not sure how much we can read into this performance.

I agree, the first real test of the season is this week, and likely it will be the toughest opponent the Huskers face all year. It will take a flawless performance from the Huskers to win this game in LA. I believe it is possible but I don't exactly expect it.
