Sam Keller has been named Nebraska's starting quarterback for the 2007 season.

"We have had a thorough evaluation and feel at this point it is in the best interest of the team to announce Sam (Keller) as the starter going into the Nevada game," Callahan said after yesterday's practice. "I've got to mention there was great competition throughout camp. (Junior quarterback) Joe Ganz is a class act. We appreciate all of his efforts. He continues to improve and he will definitely be our backup this season." Right decision?

There was never any doubt that Keller would start this year. Husker fans have known this since he transferred to Nebraska last year. He has size and an NFL caliber arm, it would be foolish to start anyone else at this time.

Why even open it up then? Was Callahan legitimately giving Ganz a look for was this just done to motivate Keller?

I think it was a motivation tactic, he did the same thing last year to Zac Taylor when it was fairly obvious to everyone that Taylor would start. Add to that the fact that Callahan and Keller's dad have been long time friends and he didn't want to make it appear he was just handing the job to Keller. At the same time, Gansz had a solid summer camp and has proven himself to be a capable backup.
