Re: Nebraska Cornhuskers football schedule

Highlights from this announcement include the fact that NU and Colorado will continue to square off on Thanksgiving weekend, and according to this story, "the Huskers’ rotation against the Big 12 South will remain the same. Nebraska will face Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013, and will take on Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas A&M in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015." Thoughts on the upcoming Nebraska football schedules?

What happened to them? Well, they were Big 12 runner-ups and are going to play in the Cotton Bowl. I'd say they're doing pretty well for themselves, wouldn't you? Yeah, they probably would've preferred a conference title and a BCS bowl bid, but hey, they had a pretty darn good year I'd say.

No I didnt mean it like that but im talking about the past previous years I agree with you that the program did do good this year but they used to be a power house. Nebraska used to land some top recruits, lets just hope they get there program to where it used to be so we can watch some good football.

The answer to your question is head coach Tom Osborne retired after the 1997 season. Frank Solich inherited a team that had just won 3 national titles in 4 years and was quite succesful with those players. However, Solich was not a good recruiter and as a result the talent level slipped under his watch. Longtime defensive coordinater Charlie McBride retired after Frank's first season as head coach. By the time Nebraska hired Bill Callahan to coach, there were some serious shortcomings in the talent level and to make it even worse for the players they did have, Callahan brought in an offense that the majority of the players were not recruited to play. Callahan has been a very successful recruiter and has brought in some top talent. At the same time, he had to dismiss the only experienced offensive lineman he had his first year who also was the only all american on the team when he dismissed Richie Incognito because of behavioral problems involving him fighting with his teammates and also many personal fouls he committed on the field. Now Callahan has his own players in place and the program looks better each of the last 2 years. They may well win the Big12 next year when ASU transfer Sam Keller takes over at QB.

Huskers Finalize 2008 and 2009 Football Schedules

Nebraska has announced the addition of five non-conference home games during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, completing the schedules for those two seasons.

The games announced for the 2008 season include Sept. 6 against San Jose State, Sept. 13 against New Mexico State and Sept. 27 versus Western Michigan. In 2009 Nebraska has finalized contracts with Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept. 12) and Arkansas State (Sept. 26). Each of the five schools agreed to one-game contracts to play the Huskers in Lincoln.

The non-conference contests complete the Huskers’ schedules for both the 2008 and 2009 campaigns. Previously, Nebraska announced a home-and-home series with Virginia Tech that will bring the Hokies to Lincoln on Sept. 20, 2008, with Nebraska traveling to Blacksburg on Sept. 19, 2009. Additionally, Nebraska previously announced a Sept. 5, 2009 home matchup against Florida Atlantic.

“We are pleased to have the 2008 and 2009 schedules finalized,” Nebraska Athletic Director Steve Pederson said. “We are extremely excited about Virginia Tech highlighting our schedule for those two seasons. That should be a great intersectional home-and-home series against one of the nation’s top programs, and I know our fans are looking forward to the trip to Blacksburg.

Re: Nebraska Cornhuskers football schedule

I'm sure nobody expected Wake Forest to be so dramatically improved back when the game was scheduled. A road game at Wake Forest followed by a home date against USC will be a litmus test on just how far Callahan has brought the Huskers. Nevada has been a consistently improving team in the WAC and played in a bowl game last year losing a close one to the Miami Hurricanes. Add road dates with Missouri and Texas and this schedule becomes pretty challenging. The Nebraska-Missouri game may well decide who wins the Big 12 north this year.
