| Re: Driver changes coming at Rick Ware Racing Wed Mar 25, 2009 9:04 am EDT There's something Intimidating about this kid named Jeffrey By Jay Busbee NASCAR is, at its heart, a family business, and one of the sport's most famous families added a new chapter on Tuesday. Starting later this year, Rick Ware Racing will be running a couple Nationwide drivers with a very familiar name. Kerry Earnhardt, eldest son of the Intimidator, will be returning to the Nationwide Series, and this time he'll have his 19-year-old son Jeffrey by his side. That's Jeffrey there at right, smirking a more-than-vaguely-familiar smirk. Those of you griping about Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s lack of on-track success ought to look one branch up the family tree. Kerry Earnhardt has had a racing career that isn't exactly spectacular. But Jeffrey is, so far, an unknown quantity in the Nationwide series. Still, he's Senior's grandson and Junior's nephew, so you've got to figure there's at least some racing in the blood. Jeffrey will run seven races in the Nationwide series, starting with Dover on May 30. The idea is to get his toes in the water while keeping him eligible for a run at the 2010 Rookie of the Year. He'll also run races at Chicago, Watkins Glen, Montreal, Michigan, Charlotte and Atlanta, that last of which he'll run alongside his dad. (Interestingly enough, Dale Junior is also scheduled to run in that Atlanta race. Think that'll be a story?) Naturally, the national media is already salivating at the thought of a new, raucous young Earnhardt on the track. "It's a little bit eerie to see him and listen to him talk," says ESPN.com's Terry Blount. "Is it in the genes? We will find out." "The tone of voice, the mannerisms and the facial features made [Jeffrey's debut NASCAR Now] interview perhaps a preview of the new face of NASCAR," the Daly Planet wrote. "At a time when the sport needs some additional momentum, especially to help with the crowds at the tracks, having another Earnhardt will only be a plus." All I can add is this: I look forward to seeing Jeffrey Earnhardt bust then-reigning two-time Sprint Cup champion Kyle Busch in the mouth in 2013. |
