Two Class Cup Lite Standings

Would you look at what our Bob Tanner has started now. A simple hypothetical thread about how far apart the Super Teams are from the smaller ones in cup now has us actually keeping track of two separate classes. It made me think about how doing almost the same thing would be great for Cup Raiders and Nationwide Regulars, and I have agreed to take the job, so here's what I've come up with.

I've decided I'll use NASCAR's existing scoring system. The point of doing this (at least for me) is so we can look at Nationwide standings as if there were no cup regulars, so using that scoring system would do just that. Here is a mock results chart to explain how it will go.

Say this was the top 10 finishers for a given race:
1. Kyle Busch
2. Carl Edwards
3. Clint Bowyer
4. Jason Leffler
5. David Ragan
6. Mike Bliss
7. Brad Keselowski
8. Jeff Burton
9. David Reutimann
10. Michael Annett

I would take that and separate CR from NR and score them accordingly. Here would be the point standings for the above example (I've left out bonus points for leading laps because it's too much to make those stats up just for an example):

CR Standings
1. Kyle Busch- 185
2. Carl Edwards- 170
3. Clint Bowyer- 165
4. David Ragan- 160
5. Jeff Burton- 155
6. David Reutimann- 150

NR Standings
1. Jason Leffler- 185
2. Mike Bliss- 170
3. Brad Keselowski- 165
4. Michael Annett- 160

So it's pretty simple. I will post each classes race results and then the corresponding point standings after each race, and we'll see what happens. I may be crazy for doing this, but at least it will enhance the way I track the Nationwide series (not hard to do since prior to this, I payed zero attention).

Also, if anyone has suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Two Class Cup Lite Standings

Looks good, Wilks. I'm glad to see Gonzo leading the BGN Regulars. If he were 7-8 years younger he might have a good chance at another ride in Cup. Hell, if Brendan is doing well, I might even watch one or two of the Cup Lite races.

Do you keep your stats on a spreadsheet? If not, it makes things a lot easier. If you have Excel on your drive, and want to use it, I can send you a copy of my Two Class Sheet with all the formulas pluged in. (I think I can. anyway; I've never done it before) I have mine set up to keep running totals throughout the year. All I have to do is plug in figures and then run <SORT>.

Looks like Brendan fits in nicely in Rusty's stuff. I look forward to watching him run with limited Cup interference, although the first real opportunity for that isn't until Nashville in June. I think Cup is off the first time they go there, so I figure they'll be showing up.

I do exactly that. I've got the full standings for both classes on a spreadsheet so all I have to do is plug in my numbers and update it. The hardest thing I have to do is figure out who gets bonus points and add them to the appropriate driver, which is pretty easy.

Well, I actually watched yesterday's race most of the way through (first time I've done that at a cup companion race in a good 2 years) and saw most of the Cup Raiders have problems. That was a good opportunity to see Nationwide regulars have a nice battle in the top ten at the finish. Even so, it just never fails, the 3 Cup raiders that didn't have trouble at some point are the first 3 overall finishers.

Brendan Gaughan continues to show well in Rusty's equipment. 7th overall after spinning twice. He's 32 years old and deserving of another chance when Rusty goes Cup racing...

Impressive day for ARCA champ Justin Allgaier too. He was up front and beating the Cup Raiders even before the all had problems. He passed Edwards and Harvick mid race and led some laps. Nice to see that once in a while.
