Lapping the Field

Here's a good one that I just got to thinking about. Who was the race winner to finish on a lap by himself (lap the field)? Where and When?

Re: Lapping the Field

I think there's more than one, but my internet connection is so slow I fell asleep waiting for the page to update so....

Here's the first in NASCAR:
Red Byron
Sept 25, 1949
Martinsville (200 laps)
Margin of Victory: 3+ laps

Re: Lapping the Field

I believe the last one to do it was Jeff Burton, but I haven't looked it up. I think it was back around 1998 or so.

Re: Lapping the Field

I made a mistake. There have been many winners to lap the field. I meant to add a "last" in there. Who was the LAST race winner to lap the field was what I intended, and Jeff Burton is not it. Sorry 'bout that.

Got it. I was confusing his winning flag-to-flag at Louden in 2000 with leading by a lap.
Is the answer Bobby Allison in the Mason-Dixon 500 on 5/16/82? I think he had the field covered by 2-3 laps that day? By today's standards of how many car finish on the lead lap determining the quality of a race, that one wouldn't have even counted as a race?

Nope. I think you might be close to it, but there is at least one that was later still.

A hint: It was recent enough for it to be considered out of the ordinary.

I'm having problems with a slow computer (I picked up some spy ware but can't locate it), plus we're getting ready for our cruise next week. I'm going to have to concede. Bill Elliott's name, around 1988, comes to mind but I can't verify it. I'll let someone else take the con on this one.
