One of the worse crashes in Talladega history. Early in the race Ramo Stott slid and started a crash the took out, I believe 1/3 of the field. Many said the major cause was the large starting field that started the race (60, if I remember right). I believe the the final count was 23-24 cars unable to restart the race. I'm looking at a photo of the wreck as I write this and I see 18 cars destroyed in this one view.

Re: New Trivia Thread

Dick Brooks also scored his first and only win I believe. Not sure if it was that one or the Winston 500.

I was too, Bring. I just washed my hand and couldn't do a thing with them (typo). I meant '73.

Pearson won the '73 Winston 500 and Brook won the Talladega 500. Smith also died the Talladega race. I just got my races confused.

Totally my bad. Boy! Is my face red!

Re: New Trivia Thread

Sorry ... been out of the house for a while. None of those answers are the one I am looking for. It relates to an individual.

Was it the fact that Bobby Issac retired in the middle of the race?

It was reported that he radio'd Bud Moore, the owner, and told him he was coming in and retiring. he said he was running along and "a voice" told him to retire. He said he didn't know anything else but to abide by it, so he pulled in, climbed out and never drove competitively again.

Re: New Trivia Thread

It was, it was. He later died at the age of 45. Pall bearers were Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, Tim Flock and Neil Castles. He was buried on a hill overlooking Hickory Motor Speedway which was where he ran his last race.

Now you know the rest of the story !!
