| Trivia - Aug 17 OK, the last one was tougher than I thought it would be. here's an easy one (Easy to research if you know the general area to look): Who was the first driver to be killed in a race car accident on the present Daytona Speedway? What car was he driving?

HISTORY ALERT - Read further only if you'd like a bit of NASCAR history Here is a little bit of history for those of you who didn't know: On Feb 7th Fireball Roberts qualified for the first 100-mile qualifying race at 140.581 in a '59 Pontiac. The next day Chapman Root unveiled his Sumar Special Indy car (Kurtis chassis with a 550hp Meyer-Drake engine) which he was going to challenged the current closed track world record of 177.038 MPH set by Tony Bettenhausen at Monza, IT in 1958. Teague's started with a lap of 171.82, but said after coming in that he "was just playing around and will get serious later." Teague was in the car because USAC (the Indy sanctioning body at the time) initially refused to let their drivers run on the Daytona track because they considered it too dangerous. They finally relented and Jim Rathman ran some laps in his D-A Lubricants Special (170.06 was his fastest). On the morning of February 11th, Teague again went on the track. His 3rd lap was only 160.25 but on the fourth wind got under his car and he became airborne. The car flew down the track, then hit the safety apron and began a series of flips. The car rolled and flipped 1500 feet and Teague, still strapped in his seat was thrown 100 feet ahead of the car. He was DOA at the hospital. Tom Binford immediately forbid any Indy Car competition at Daytona and that has held true until present. The only other example of an Indy car running at one of NASCAR's two super speedways that I know of is Art Malone (early drag racer and Bonneville driver) run once at Talladega in a specially modified (winged) Indy-type car (front engine) in the early 70's. I believe he went around 240 MPH, but am not sure about that. The car is on display at the Unocal museum at Talladega. History lesson over. |
