Question What 1952 auto race was won by a driver wearing a seatbelt for the first time?

Hey all. I don't usually post in the NASCAR forum, but I was hoping someone might be able to help me out with a question. I answer sports questions over at KnowBrainers (which is a question-and-answer site like Yahoo! Answers) and this one question has come in 7 or 8 times over the last few days; it must be a trivia question in some contest or something:

What 1952 auto race was won by a driver wearing a seatbelt for the first time?

I don't know if this auto race necessarily took place in the U.S. Anyway, if there are any trivia buffs around, maybe you'd know the answer?

Hi knowballer,

We've had some pretty active NASCAR Trivia threads here before so I know our members are great at this stuff. If I started a new forum for NASCAR Trivia, have you got other questions like this that you could contribute?

I'm not sure if the auto race in this specific question is a NASCAR race or not.

But in general, I could come up with some more questions. I don't consider myself a NASCAR expert, but I'm good at finding interesting questions online and otherwise. And if any other tough questions show up at KnowBrainers, I could throw them over here so more people could take a crack at 'em.

The type of race is important. Joie Chitwood was the first to wear one at Indy in 1950.

I think it is the 24 Hours at LeMans. He isn't asking for the driver, jsut the race...

I think that is it.

I believe it was the 1952 Watkins Glen U.S. Grand Prix, held on the old street course at Watkins Glen. I think the driver was named Denny Cornett, wearing a SCCA-approved lap belt.

Nice story here about Cornett. There was also a tragedy at Watkins Glen in '52. A car went off the course injuring 12 spectators and killing one. Changes took place after that.

Hmm...? I don't know if I gave the right answer or not after reading your link.

Cornett came to mind from an old article I read by Tom Mc Cahill in Mechanix Illustrated. Tom was a big NASCAR fan, but an even bigger sports car aficionado. He was especially fond of Briggs Cunningham and the Cad-Allard. I dug through my old M-I's and came up with Tom's article about the '52 Watkins-Glen race.
