Re: Nascar Trivia

In 1978 he won ZERO races and ended up switching to GM I believe. In 1979 the result was his 7th championship.

Gm is one thing I was looking for, but what was the other? I'll drop a hint! Reporters!

I'll bet he does too, but I think he said he'd be gone for a while.

Re: Nascar Trivia

Ok everyone! Here is the second part of the question since no one is getting it. It was about the reporters for the 1978 Michigan Race. First part was guessed it was about Richard Petty. But here is the second part.At that time it was mostly Southern world of Nascar and back then Petty was a near-god in the sport so when he switched to the GM, none of the reporters ventured this far up and for most was the first time up to Michigan back then because of Petty that was big news! Some reporters paid their own way up their because the companys they worked for didn't see the need to go up to Michigan. Reporters have been coming up ever since!

My guess would have been that the Championship 500 in 1978 was the debut of Richard Petty driving a Chevie. (He finished 14th)

I didn't know about the reports going to Michigan but it makes sense. Until the, or later, NASCAR rated only a couple paragraghs in the major media. It's only coverage was by local journalists andf a couple of freelancers (one was Tom McCahill who covered only Florida and Georgia races. Hehad most of his articles in Mechanix Illustrated). Some of you other old-timers might remeber the days when the ONLY major news in stock car racing could be found at your local track, or thru a subscription, to National Speed Sport News, run by the venerable Chris Economacki.
