My guess would have been that the Championship 500 in 1978 was the debut of Richard Petty driving a Chevie. (He finished 14th)
I didn't know about the reports going to Michigan but it makes sense. Until the, or later, NASCAR rated only a couple paragraghs in the major media. It's only coverage was by local journalists andf a couple of freelancers (one was Tom McCahill who covered only Florida and Georgia races. Hehad most of his articles in Mechanix Illustrated). Some of you other old-timers might remeber the days when the ONLY major news in stock car racing could be found at your local track, or thru a subscription, to National Speed Sport News, run by the venerable Chris Economacki.
