It wasn't 240, Ducky, it was 228 here is a link: NASCAR.com - Rusty Wallace hits 228 mph in Talladega trial - June 10, 2004

Can you imagine how boring a race at Talladega would be if they'd let them run at this speed w/o the plates? Talk about follow-the-leader!

As I said, testing doesn't count. It wasn't a "legal" superspeedway car by the current rules in force at the time. It's impressive to be sure. And I'm sure Rusty will remember it 'till the end of time and it'll be one of those precious memories he'll savor for the rest of his life. Still, if NASCAR didn't put it in their record book, it's not "official"... here's the quote from Wikipedia:
Quote:
Talladega Superspeedway has the record for the fastest recorded time by a NASCAR stock car in a closed oval course, with the record of 216.309 mph set by Rusty Wallace on June 9, 2004.[2]. Wallace circled the 2.66-mile (4.28-km) trioval in 44.270 seconds, which surpassed the previous record held by Bill Elliott (212.809 mph) set in 1987, but doesn't replace the record due to the fact it was practice.
What's really impressive is Elliott's record stood for 18 years!

My brother set a local track record back in '70 that stood for almost 20 years. They will all be broken eventually...
