"first" is not necessary the "earliest" occurrence of an event, but also the highest achievement in an event, i.e., you may have placed 1st in a race, without having been the first to do so.

"fastest" implies "first".

in the world of stock car racing, he is first in the list of highest speed attained on a closed course.

Yep. Sixteen times voted Most Popular Driver by the fans. Elliott attributes his "popularity" to a small group of very zealous fans, and it may be true, but still, he got the most votes 16 different times .. any other driver's fans could have done the same thing. After winning it the last time in 2002, he had his name withdrawn from further votes.

as best I can tell that may happen in the next year or two. He's got a son and nephew he's tutoring in racing and they are starting to move up into bigger and better series, which will require more time. I suspect he'll "officially" retire sometime next year, then run a race now and then like Terry L. but just a guess on my part.
