Thumbs up Most Starts Without A Win

I don't recall this one being asked:

Who made the most starts in NASCAR's major Series without a win?

I haven't given it a lot of research. Let's see if your researched answer and mine jive. Mine was a cigar smoker.

Re: Most Starts Without A Win

While I was running down my answer, I found out the driver I thought it was (Wendell Scott) actually has a win (lots of controversy there) and then I stumbled over the answer:
J.D. McDuffie - 27 years, 653 starts without a win!

Okay, Duckie, you've got me (and others, I'm sure) curious - what's the controversial story of Wendell Scott's win?

RD and Bob will probably correct me here Lefty... but I believe it was mainly because he was black, and at the time the culture of the south if you get where I'm goin here. It was eventually corrected a few days later. Like I said though, RD and Bob(especially Bob) will probably correct me and set the story straight.

That is correct !!! Sadly.

Kenny Wallace is the only active driver on the list (in the top 10) with somewhere in the vicinity of 345 races with no wins.

So wait, what happened - he won and they refused to declare him the winner or something?

Yes. The victory was given to Buck Baker. This was in 1963. A few days later NASCAR made the "correction" .... as they refer to it.

Plus you also must take into consideration that the race was at the Jacksonville [FL] Speedway. It was tough enough for a black to race in the South, but to actually win a race? Unthinkable!

FWIW, that track, on Pecan Park Rd north of JAX, continued to operate until last year when it went under.

I have the paper clipping from the race. This afternoon, while NOT watching the Cup Lite race, I'll transcribe it here. It's an enlightening, interesting and ambiguous read.

After reading the article I think it is interesting enough to warrent being put over on the NASCAR Forum side. If Steve, Duck or Ross object to this posting I apologize. But I thought the content of the article might stimulate some interesting discussion and I feel as though some NASCAR Forum members might not visit this forum.
