Red face Who Was 1st ... To Lead Flag to Flag?

Who was the first driver to lead from the first green flag to the checkered flag in a NASCAR race of 250 miles or more? (cite the track and date.)

I'm going to go strictly on gut feeling here and say Eddie Pagan, out in California. I think it was Sacramento but the date escapes me. It'll probably be moot because I don't think that race was over 200 miles but I thought I'd give it a SWAG anyway.

Good SWAG! .. unfortunately, the race was 241 laps at Bay Meadows Speedway in San Mateo, a 1 mile track.

The race in this question is on the other side of the country some years later and was won by one of your favs. (Now, I've probably given it away!)

A home boy from Indianapolis! (Another of those Northerners who came south to run NASCAR) Ran red, white and blue Mercs, if I remember right.
