That was the year they mandated them. So let's try July Daytona 1987. Driver to be announced id date and track are correct.

It wasn't Daytona and it wasn't 1987 .. it was a different track and much earlier.

Re: Who Was 1st ... To Win A Restrictor Plate Race?

Unless there's something I've missed, it was Pete Hamilton at Talladega in 1970. To the best of my memory plates first came into being at superspeedways in mid 1970 to combat the Ford "Boss" 429 and the Chrysler "Hemi" 426.

In April Bobby Issac (K&K CHarger Daytona) won the pole with almost 200 mph. With the plate he also sat on the pole (again, in a K&K Charger), but at a speed of around 185, if I remember.

Ya didn't miss a thing. It was, indeed Pete Hamilton, driving for Petty Enterprises, at Talladega on 8/23/70.

hey Ziggy, welcome to GoTeamsGo and the NASCAR Forums.

As far as I know, there were never any rectrictor plate races at Michigan. My source shows Glotzbach with 4 restrictor plate races: the Pepsi 400 in '90 and '92, and two others in '92 - the Winston 500 and the Die Hard 500.

With pole speeds in the range of 161 mph in the races preceding and following the '70 Yankee 400, there wasn't enough speed to warrant a restrictor plate. Michigan has always been a great track for racing with it's many grooves, but it has never been one of the really high speed tracks like Talladega and Daytona, the only tracks to host restrictor plate races that I know of.

Re: Who Was 1st ... To Win A Restrictor Plate Race?

NASCAR Confidential: Stories of the Men and Women who Made Stock Car Racing page 154 - Paul Goldsmith talks about developing the restrictor plate and it's first use at Michigan.

August 8, 1970 - Maximum Wingspan

August 16, 1970 - Wing Car Gallery ~ Page 3

May 7, 1972 - Marty Robbins (I like this one because I've read many stories of Marty Robbins starting the race with a mediocre car, pulling into the garage for a few laps, coming back out and blowing the doors off the field and then pulling back into the garage to finish with a mediocre car again)!

Charlie Glotzbach talks about winning the first restricted race but says they were actually restrictor rings in 1970 and restrictor plates in 1971 - Winged Warriors/National B-Body Owners Association - CHARLIE GLOTZBACH GUEST APPEARANCE

From your "Maximum Wingspan reference I found this bit:
Quote:
On Aug. 8, 1970, NASCAR announced that beginning with the Aug. 16 Yankee 400 at Michigan International Speedway, all of the Grand National (now Winston Cup) cars would be required to use a plate between the carburetor and intake manifold with a maximum of 1 1/4-inch venturi opening. Prior to this, the venturi opening on the carburetor was 1 11/16-inches.
From your Winged Car Gallery reference I found this bit:
Quote:
Charlie Glotzbach leads the pack around the front chute at Michigan International Speedway in the 1970 Yankee 400. The August 16, 1970 event was the first race ever to be run with NASCAR mandated restrictor plates. Glotzbach won from the pole in his Dow Chemical Co.Dodge Daytona.
And from the Glotzbach Interview reference I found this bit:
Quote:
What did you think of the restrictor plate? Well, I ran the very first one, I think, that was ever run. And I won the race at Michigan with one.
Though I can't find any "official" mention by NASCAR that the '70 Yankee 400 was a "restrictor plate race", it seems that it was indeed the first restrictor plate race.

Congratulations Ziggy on proving the first restrictor plate race was when YOU said it was and that Charlie Glotzbach was the winner.

Great work! I remember listening to the Daytona race Pete won and the restrictor plate was one of the race's minor story lines. I just did some research and stopped at this race. The Michigan race is a new one on me. Thanks for the education.
