Our subject this time is considered the best race car builder of all time in NASCAR and these statistics seem to back that up:
- 262 of 362 Winston Cup races between 1974 and 1985 were won by cars built by this man (that's 72%!);
- four consecutive Winston Cup Championships won by his cars ('75-'78); and
- all 30 races in '78 were won by cars built by him.
He also won some races as a driver and as an owner. As a successful car owner he counted Fireball Roberts, AJ Foyt, Donnie Allison, Junior Johnson, Bobby Isaac and Cale Yarborough as his drivers at one time or another. He and Smokey Yunick were friends for over 50 years.
The sign in his shop read "... where money buys speed .. How fast do you want to go?"
