I had neither. The earliest I remembered was Alan Kulwicki for a short time in 1991.

Correct. The Daytona 500 had four cars with homorary sponsorship by US Army, USN, Air Force and USMC to honor the troops in Desert Storm. NASCAR footed part of the sponsorship cost and Alan was in the US Army car.

The Desert Storm cars are the first time I remember them as well! And I've been watching and going to races since the late 70's.

Guess my 40 year old memory is a bit foggy!

CORRECTION.......neil bonnet drove nord krouskopf's # 71 dodge at the darlinton 1977 "rebel 500",sponsored by the army.....

it appears unless there's any older, Dale Sr. in 1976 driving the #30 is still the first Army sponsored car....
