Prominent Owner a Driver in Another Sport?

this one shouldn't be too tough for you guys.

Who's the prominent driver from another motorsports venue that came to NASCAR as an owner and got some wins, top 5's, etc.?

hint: this wasn't a low profile deal.

I'm pretty sure that's Cowboy Kenny Bernstein coming from drag racing to start King Motorsports in 1986, winning 2 races with Ricky Rudd and 1 with Brett Bodine.

I'd say Penske is technically also correct. Though it isn't mentioned in the following, I know he raced a 1961 Pontiac out of his dealership in Philly and won at lease one race at langhorne.

I lifted the following from our old friend, Wikipedia:

Starting in 1958, Penske purchased, raced and sold race cars, and was very successful both financially and on the track.

By 1960, he was a well known race car driver (Sports Illustrated SCCA Driver of the Year), winning prestigious races until 1965, when he retired as a driver, to concentrate on his first Cadillac dealership in Philadelphia, PA. He subsequently began his now famous Penske Racing in 1965 as well. Interestingly enough, although Penske competed in two Formula One Grand Prix, and won a NASCAR Pacific Coast Late Model race at Riverside in 1963, he never ran the Indy 500. In fact, he was offered a rookie test at Indianapolis but turned it down for business reasons. Rookie Mario Andretti stepped in for Penske to take that test at Indianapolis

ok .. I'll grant half a point for Penske. only because my question wasn't clear that the driver turned owner was a champion in his sport when he "invaded" NASCAR which was he reason for the hint ("this wasn't a low profile deal") and "prominent" doesn't specify how.

what?! hey, when I signed up for this gig there wasn't anything said about me keeping track of every tom dick and harry's trivia points!!!

I got enough problems trying to keep my spreadsheets working right with the "best drivers of the decades" to have to deal with another one right now.

besides, I assumed you, being the Super Mod, would have already had the list going somewhere...

chill charlie .. chill ... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

ok, based on my perception of the number of times you've answered (successfully or not) the trivia questions, it's entirely possible you are in the chase .. or the chase for the chase .. this most recent half point not withstanding. however as to your actual position, I don't have that information at the moment.

So you're saying you didn't read the fine print in your GTG contract?

Re: Prominent Owner a Driver in Another Sport?

I dug through my old mags before I left today (I'm writing this from Knoxville) and found a picture of Roger's '61 Pontiac. I can't tell the colours (B&W was about all they had in the auto mags in the 60's) but it's a #2 '61 Pontiac sponsored by Bee Chevrolet Pontiac Buick of Philadelphia. Roger Penske's name is over the driver's door. The story tells how Roger is planning to run a fall USAC stock car race at Nazareth.
