i figure many here must have assumed the "half season" meant they figured you would include the stats from what has already transpired this year
no apology needed .. as I said it's Julius's calendar guys who screwed up everything .. on a worse level even than the pre-Y2K programmers. just goes to show how lack of proper planning can really screw up things in the future (not that I'm perfect...)

I am thinking that, once digested, I may have learned something here though.

luckily you don't have to designate decade on social security forms. if you did, there'd be a whole new bureaucracy in place to deal with that.

history, math and NASCAR are all related. in fact, if it wasn't for NASCAR we wouldn't need so much of the other two

the whole intent of this thread is to teach by informing. a person armed with knowledge is a powerful force.

ciao, ya'll.

Re: Best Drivers from 7 Decades of NASCAR

The Decade 1990 results are in.

The 90's saw 5 of the legends of NASCAR fighting it out .. and the results, though a little surprising to some, reinforce the standings of these powerhouses, though some would argue the order is wrong.
  • There were 10 seasons with a total of 309 races included in the Decade 1990.
  • 46 drivers shared 927 podiums, leading with Martin-101, Earnhardt-99 and J. Gordon-93.
  • with the most wins at 49, J. Gordon lead the pack with Earnhardt-35 and R.Wallace-33 following.
  • charting 36 2nd place podiums, Earhardt nosed Martin-35 followed by Jarrett-25.
  • Martin out ran his competitors for 3rd place podiums with 36, while Earnhardt-28 and Jarrett-25 followed.
Although Martin had 6 championship podiums (2nd:3, 3rd:3) they weren't good enough to top Earnhardt's 5 (1st:4, 2nd:1) or J. Gordon's 4 (1st:3, 2nd:1) in points. Jarrett also had 4 (1st:1, 2nd:1, 3rd:2) but not enough points to unseat any of the leaders.

Based on the points assigned to each podium level, the top 3 drivers for Decade 1990 are:
  1. J. Gordon-225
  2. Earnhardt-219
  3. Martin-205
Following immediately behind these 3 were R. Wallace-169 and Jarrett-148. No others were in triple digits.

who's zoomin' who?

then you say "For the six and a half seasons in this decade, it looks good to me." not a typo, so figured there was something else amiss .. as many problems as I had putting this together, it wouldn't have surprised me .. thus my question .. and now we're back to here .. confused.

Re: Best Drivers from 7 Decades of NASCAR

Wow! The 1980's provided the fans with lots of excitement as 38 drivers shared 888 podiums in 296 races. 11 of those 38 drivers shared the 30 championship podiums.

Years with the most drivers winning races included:
  1. 1984 & 1986 - 13
  2. 1983 & 1988 - 12
  3. 1980 & 1987 - 10
other results include:
  • Darrell Waltrip had the most wins (12) in a single season, twice (1981 & 1982)! Also with single season double digit wins were Dale Earnhardt and Bill Elliott each with 11.
  • Darrell Waltrip also lead all drivers with 118 podiums, the only driver to score a perfect 1st, 2nd and 3rd place race podium in every season. Dale Earnhardt followed with 90 race podiums and Bobby Allison had 72.
  • Both Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt scored 3 season championships and tied with Bill Elliott for most championship podiums at 5. Ranking the championship podiums, however,
    • Darrell was first with 1st:3, 2nd:2,
    • Dale was second with 1st:3, 2nd:1, 3rd:1,
    • Bill was third with 1st:1, 2nd:2, 3rd:2.
Based on the total points awarded, the top 3 drivers of the 1980's are:
  1. Darrell Waltrip - 277
  2. Dale Earnhardt - 206
  3. Bobby Allison - 158
Other drivers with triple digit points were:
  • Bill Elliott - 149
  • Harry Gant - 108
  • Terry Labonte - 104
the 1970's are next!

anything is possible with numbers...as long as you don't break the rules (of math)

"far and away" aren't the words I'd use to describe the results you claim. but, using your characterization of the data I'd have to agree with you. however, in order to make the comparison proper, you must factor in the top 3 results not reported here as well.

but, I'm not interested in proving your assertion one way or the other at this time. the total record is the defining data and I'm on my way to fry bigger fish... this is merely an exercise to focus on results other than number of wins as the defining element of "best driver".

good try, though.
